Phonics Journey

It's has been 2 years since i have written in this blog for Jay. He's no longer the little baby but slowly growing into an inquisitive, playful toddler. He's now 30months old. He's picking things up fast-gibberish turning into words then slowly trying to form sentences. Although he's not speaking very fluently, at least he's trying hard.
He's attending Pre-N class now and he's picking up things fast. After sending him there, did i realise that actually he's lagging behind. Children in his class are able to identify and name things and some can speak in sentences. I realised that i have done nothing for him. To me, i thought providing him with a happy childhood for him would be and i have no intention to stress him so early . But seeing the other toddlers speaking fluently, it raised the alarm in me that something has to be done.
My colleagues also introduced me to a website of a working mum who is teaching her children how to teach reading and phonics. Picking up some tips from her website.

I started printing the letters of the alphabets and getting him to watch the Leapfrog disc. It was not easy to get him to stay tuned throughout the disc and he also has his own preference- Barney, Bob the builder, Hi-Five. Sometimes he will follow the disc and say a few sounds then off he goes to find his toys.

Finally, decided to place the disc in the car so that it keeps playing and playing till now, he's able to get the sounds of the alphabets. He can recognise the sound and say them but he can't read the letter. eg Letter A- he says 'air' but he doesn't recognise it as A'. after watching the disc too many times, he can reenact some of the scenes from the disc. So adorable. For instance, the scenes for the Letter 'V' is that where the frog 'Ted' feels sick in a vibrating room, Jay can reenact the scene. Well, if that helps him in recognising his letters, i don't mind. And i really think he can remember the letter better by relating to the scenes in the disc.

At times, he will reject the Leapfrog disc and prefer his Dibo sing along. I don't mind as he is also learning how to sing.

Next, is to get him to recognise the letters of the alphabets. Tried to get him to sit and recognise the letter. The first time i tried with A-E. He managed to sit with me. The next day, he simply refused to sit down and read the letters. He knows the letter but refused to do it for he feels like he's being forced.

Knowing that getting him to sit still and read the letter is impossible (as for kids at this age), i decided to convert it into a game for him-The Fishing Game. He has to fish the alphabet that i read out .He's totally excited. He enjoyed fishing the alphabets. he managed to find out the correct alphabets with a few errors. It's ok. I am totally impressed by him.

Of course, novelty wears off. After a few times, he doesn't seemed to enjoy it as much. I got to think of some more new ways to capture his attention. Consistency is another problem. I need to do it everyday but sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances and his mood, it's a bit difficult.
Sometimes, he wakes up late from his nap, then it will be dinner time. Following which, his bath time then it will be difficult to coach especially when his sister wakes up also. I must tell myself i must let him do it everyday  for at least 10 minutes. Well, i must say it's not easy. Let's keep trying and i must not be lazy. Do what i could while i still can and still have the time.

The Fishing Game:-(using letter)
  1. Lay the Alphabets ( a few at a time-5 letters) on the floor in no particular order.
  2. Read out a letter-B
  3. Get my boy to look for the letter and use a fishing rod to fish up the letter.
  4. Try a few letters each day. Revise what he has learnt the previous day. Adding  on to the list of what he has learnt the previous day.eg: A- E on Mon, A-E + F-I on Tue, F-I +J-N on Wed, J-N +O-S on Thu, O-S +T-W, T-W +X-Z.
  5. After going thru all the 26 letters, place any 5-8 letters on the floor.
  6. Read out one of the letter.
  7. Get my boy to fish out the letter.
  8. If he's able to do it, he's has recognised the letter.
The same game can be played using the phonics sounds-which is what i am doing with my boy. I need to teach him using letters.

Rollin good times

Ever since, Jay mastered the one time rolling over skill, he has been rolling on his tummy whenever he has the opprotunity. Since practice makes perfect, i have also mastered the skill of changing his diaper with him rolling on his tummy.

Rolling on his tummy is nothing new to Jay since he got the hang of it. Now, he is able to make a few rolls in a roll. He seemed to be having a rollin good time by rolling at least 2 times. If the bed is big enough, i am sure he will make more than 2 rolls.. I am so afraid he might roll off the bed. Even when he is sleeping, he also wants to roll...

Jayven's latest feat.

Too busy to be blogging... ha excuses... it's too lazy to use the computer. It's either too slow or it will hang. It just did that on me- hang......Yeah, it's time to get a new laptop-good excuse.

Hence this post is a bit outdated.
Mummy was changing Jay's diaper when she suddenly exclaimed. Jay was trying to roll on his side but he was unable to get the hang of it. So he got stuck...The moment he got stuck, he became very frustrated...To ease his frustration, we decided to give him a helping hand...
See the joy on his face when he managed to roll on his side.

As the saying goes..Practice makes perfect. Jay kept practising till he managed to master it. Mummy exclaimed when she saw Jay on his tummy when he was left on his back 2 seconds ago. Since then, Jay has been rolling on his tummy whenever he is left to lie down.
Imagine how hard it is to change his diaper when he is rolling.

Jayven's first LRT ride..

Jay next to the signboard...waiting for the LRT.
To help Jayven familiarise with Singapore's transport system, we decided to bring Jayven's on his first LRT ride...haha excuses. Mummy and I decided to bring Jay to Bukit Panjang Plaza for a walk. There are two ways to get there: LRT or Foot. We decided to take LRT as it's much faster. By foot, I rather stay at home...
He seems to know that the LRT is here...Wait for me..
In the cabin...he's thinking...

Jay seemed excited on his first ride. In the tiny cabin, he set his foot ( i mean his pram) into the LRT. Luckily, it was not too crowded and the air condition was still working. Jay was lying confortably in his pram, surveying his surroundings.

Finally, we reached BP Plaza. We went for a short shopping trip as there aren't many shops to shop. Jay started getting fidgety - time for milk..We went in search of the nursing room. I think i am getting very familiar with nursing rooms instead of fashion boutiques in shopping centres. In a desperate search, i almost went into the Gents (paiseh). Finally, we found thr room. While we were in the lift, Jay was still awake. On the way to the room, i decided to take a peek at him. Alamak, he has fallen asleep.. That was fast..

Fearing that he would wake up before we manage to get home, we decided to hang around BP for a while. Finally , we decided that he was not going to wake up soon. We rushed home asap. He woke up just in time when we reached home for his feed. It always a challenge to
bring him out...

"Educational" Fieldtrip to Orchard

Jayven put his feet into Orchard Ion. This is his second visit there. Iwent for lunch in Ion with colleagues, while Jayven was still in my tummy. We took him to shop (for my things). Fascinated at the crowd, and we were really challenging to go Ion on a Saturday. We pushed Jay around and went straight to B-Burberry. Wow! The latest collections was captivating and so was the price. Then we went to L-LV. Imagine we have to queue to get in there. As usual, there was also a crowd. I went in and have a look and came out again. Economy is bad, why are there still so many people buying branded goods then?

We then went to Starbucks for coffee while i have to pat Jay to sleep. We sat there waiting for Jay's Godma. We then proceeded to walk to Taka. The christmas lightings were so beautiful and Jay was captivated by them. Upon entering Taka, Jay learned a few more alphabets - C-Coach, D-Dior,F-Fendi, G-Gucci. Before we were able to go into Coach, Jay was not feeling very happy. He started to get cranky so i have to forego Coach and off we go. Bye Orchard.

Jay was fed on the way to dinner at Cassuarina. He started getting cranky as he was sleepy when we reached. So i had to spend the next ten minutes patting him to sleep. Afraid of waking up, i decided to carry him in my arms throughout dinner. Jay must be dreaming of food as he could smell the delicious Chilli crab, mee goreng, and my favourite sweet and sour pork..
We set off for home after dinner as it was way past Jay's sleeptime...

Adventurous Outing-West Coast Park

We decided to have a family outing at West Coast Park with QQ and Jayven. We decided to give it a try-bringing both of them out ourselves. Preparation for the trip took a while. The weather does not really look promising on our way there. We were thinking of foregoing the outing but decided to give it a try since we promised QQ to bring him there.
Finally arrived at West Coast Park...Yet to rain but looked quite gloomy.

As we took our first step into the park, i looked up and see....

Oh, it's so dark and gloomy. Will it rain?

Looks like we can't cover the whole West Coast Park, seeing that the weather doesn't look promising. So we just took a short stroll near the playground area. Chris walked QQ while i was pushing Jayven in his pram. QQ looked very excited and scrambling forward, but Jayven was fast asleep so i was strolling with him. Poor QQ has no choice but to follow my pace.
We felt thirsty so decided to get a drink from Mac, so Chris has to push the pram in one hand and carried QQ's leash in the other.
It was no easy feat to walk a dog and push a baby at the same time. We had a short stroll, luckily it didn't rain. We decided to end our outing early to prevent further feeding of the mosquitoes by me, and to prevent getting caught in the rain.
Waiting for the next family outing...

QQ too distracted to look at the camera.

Xmas shopping

To get ready for the upcoming xmas celebration, we went to Jurong Point to shop for xmas presents. Too many presents to get, presents for children and presents for gift exchange. We took Jayven out to shop, thinking we could get everything within 2 hours... hahaha who knows we took more than that.

As we have too many gifts to get, we have no idea where to start from. Nothing caught our eyes for the gift exchange..so end up we focus on getting gifts for children instead. Aiyo, getting chi;dren's gift is no easy feat also...headache. Need to consider the age, safety..

Finally after some struggling, scratching head and hair tearing, we managed to get the gifts for the children. Just then, Jayven was getting impatient as it was time for food. Got to rush him to the nursing room while Chris foot the bill for the presents. Hahaha hungry at the right time.

Finally managed to find the nursing room. Jayven settled down after feeding. Time to feed our own stomachs at Fei Chui Lai Mian. Almak, still must queue up. The place is so crammed, there's hardly any space for movement. The space is so small, that i got to tuck in my tummy to get to my table right at the back of the restaurant. Finally reached our table, i then realised Jayven has pooed.

That means i need to squeeze my way through again. I managed to clean Jayven, still need to squueze through to get to my table. Maybe, Fei Chui should leave more walking space, otherwise after eating who can still squeeze through the little space. Finally, i can settle down for dinner. See my dinner...Looks plain

but it comes with the fried chicken lah...

and xiao long bao.... and guotie(already in the stomach)

Chris's looks hot! You should see his face.

After the sumptuous dinner, we made our way home. Home sweet home
